Apiary Forecast opens free Swarm Outlook across the UK as weather-aware beekeeping service enters open beta

Apiary Forecast, a practical bee-weather forecasting service for beekeepers, has opened its Swarm Outlook tool free across the UK, with free trials and a founder offer now available for the full forecast service.

Beekeeping is often pictured at its most romantic: bees moving through blossom, warm afternoons at the hive, hedgerows in flower, and the quiet satisfaction of reading a colony well. That version is real, but every beekeeper knows there is another layer behind it. Bees live by weather. A day that feels pleasant to us may still be awkward for bees if the wind is high, showers are likely, pressure is unsettled, or the air feels colder than the thermometer suggests.

Apiary Forecast has been built to make that relationship easier to understand.

The service interprets weather through a beekeeping lens, helping users think about swarm-weather, inspection conditions and forage access. It does not tell beekeepers what to do, and it does not replace colony checks, training, local judgement or direct observation. Instead, it helps answer a practical question: what is today’s weather likely to mean for the bees?

The newly opened Swarm Outlook is now free to use across the UK. It gives a weather-suitability view for swarming conditions, while making clear that weather does not predict swarms by itself. A colony still needs the biological pressure to swarm: queen cells, congestion, reduced space, colony momentum and beekeeper observation remain central.

Alongside the free Swarm Outlook, Apiary Forecast also offers member tools for:

Inspection Outlook
A practical guide to whether the weather supports opening or checking colonies. It considers temperature, apparent temperature, rain, wind, light, pressure, dampness and the best available time of day.

Forage Outlook
A weather-aware look at forage access, plant-side potential and likely practical intake. It separates flowers being present from bees being able to use them, because flowering does not always mean useful nectar income.

Forecast Location
A location selector that lets users choose from supported forecast areas across the UK, with detailed regional packs and broader UK coverage being developed as the service grows.

Founder and developer John Richardson said:

“Apiary Forecast began as a practical experiment for beekeeping in Kintyre and Mid Argyll. The more I worked with it, the clearer it became that modern life can blunt our connection with weather. We look outside and think it seems fine. Bees experience the day differently. Apiary Forecast is about helping beekeepers rebuild that link between weather, colony behaviour and practical judgement.”

The service uses a proprietary heuristic model built around bee-relevant weather interpretation. It draws on forecast data and applies beekeeping assumptions to produce practical guidance. It is not AI, and it is not a substitute for opening your eyes at the apiary. The science sits behind plain-English outputs designed to help beekeepers understand what the forecast means in practice.

A strong forecast might highlight a good swarm-weather window after poor flying days. A forage day might explain that flowers are available but bee access is poor because of wind and showers. An inspection forecast might show that the “best available” window is still a quick-check day rather than a calm, leisurely inspection day.

That educational aim is central to the service. Apiary Forecast is designed to support newer beekeepers learning how weather affects colonies, while giving experienced beekeepers faster day-to-day triage.

Apiary Forecast is currently in open beta, with free trials available while the service continues to expand. A special Founder Offer is also available for early subscribers.

The full service is available across the UK through a growing mix of broad regional coverage and more detailed regional packs. The approach is deliberately practical: start with useful coverage, gather beekeeper feedback, then refine local context where demand and testing justify it.

Notes for editors

Apiary Forecast is a beekeeper decision-support service covering Swarm Outlook, Inspection Outlook, Forage Outlook and forecast-location selection.

Swarm Outlook is now free across the UK.

Inspection Outlook and Forage Outlook are member tools, with free trials available during open beta.

Apiary Forecast supports beekeeper judgement. It does not predict swarms, prove nectar flow, decide whether a hive should be opened, or replace training, local knowledge, direct observation or colony condition checks.
