Journalist Database
What is a Journalist Database?
A journalist database is a searchable directory of media contacts. PR teams, agencies, and founders use journalist databases to find the right reporters and editors to pitch stories to. Instead of cold-Googling email addresses or guessing who covers what, a journalist database lets you filter by beat, location, outlet, and contact info so you can build targeted media lists quickly.
Press Ranger's journalist database includes 700,000+ enriched profiles from around the world. Every profile includes verified contact details, social links, recent article history, publisher affiliations, and category data so you can identify the best contacts for your campaign.
You can search the journalist database at pressranger.com/journalists.
Search Filters
The journalist search sidebar includes the following filters. You can combine any of them to narrow results.
- Country - Filter by one or more countries using the dropdown.
- Bio Search - Search across journalist bios, profiles, and coverage descriptions. Supports advanced syntax:
- Use commas to find ALL terms:
this, that - Use pipes to find ANY term:
this|that - Combine them:
this, thing | that, thing - Note: this searches within journalist bios only. To search by article content, use the Article Search database.
- Use commas to find ALL terms:
- Location - Search by city or state (e.g. "San Francisco" or "Texas").
- Category - Filter by industry categories like Technology, Finance, Health, Sports, etc. Results are sorted by how many articles each journalist has written in the selected category.
- Language - Filter by one or more languages.
- Publisher - Search for journalists who write for a specific outlet (e.g. "TechCrunch" or "Forbes"). Start typing to search.
- Titles - Filter by role or title such as "Editor", "Reporter", or "Columnist". Supports comma-separated values for multiple titles.
Under "Advanced filters" you can also filter by:
- First name / Last name - Search by a journalist's name directly.
- Has valid email - Only show profiles with a verified email address (enabled by default).
- Social media - Filter for profiles that have LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook accounts.
Click "Apply filters" to run your search. Click "Clear all filters" to reset.

Each result card shows:
- Name and photo
- Roles - Current title and outlet (e.g. "Staff Writer @ TechCrunch")
- Location - City, state, and country
- Languages - Languages the journalist writes in, with article counts per language
- Categories - Top categories the journalist covers, ranked by volume
- Publishers - Outlets the journalist has published in
- Social links - Direct links to Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram profiles
- Email - Click to open a mailto link if a verified email is available
- Bio - A short excerpt from the journalist's profile
Actions
From the search results, you can:
- View a profile - Click the journalist's name or the "View" button to open their full profile page.
- Add to a contact list - Use the action toolbar to add a journalist to one of your contact lists.
- Set a status - Mark the journalist with a CRM status to track your outreach.
- Send an email - Open a pre-filled email using one of your saved templates or a blank email.
- Mark as "Not a fit" - Hide the journalist from future search results if they are not relevant.
Bulk Selection
You can select multiple journalists at once using the checkboxes on each card. This lets you add a batch of journalists to a contact list or apply a CRM status in bulk instead of one at a time.
Tips
- Use Category filters for broad topic targeting. Categories represent industry-level topics and are the most reliable way to find journalists who consistently cover a subject.
- Use Bio Search for niche topics that don't map to a single category, like "climate tech" or "AI regulation."
- Combine Country + Category + Language to build a targeted international media list.
- Use the Publisher filter when you want to pitch a specific outlet and need to find the right person there.
- Filter by Has valid email (on by default) to ensure every result has a reachable contact.
